How constipation develops
Your digestion is like a high-precision machine, which needs the right fuel and environment: Normally, your food is moved along the digestive tract by muscle contractions. During this process, water and nutrients are removed from it in the large intestine. If your food contains too little fibre, you don’t drink enough or you don’t get enough exercise, poo moves through your intestines more slowly. This leads to too much liquid being removed and your poo can become dry and hard.
